True story. Just one of those serendipitous moments that happen in an office plan, when you're joking around with teammates, about where and how to start going after more US business, now that the independent Canadian agency you work for is finally getting recognized, and you're in the middle of one of the most ridiculous US election cycles ever.
And thus began Zulu's farcical, and very uninvited pitch to win the not up for grabs AOR business of either and/or both of the Clintion and Trump campaigns for President.
The core of the idea itself didn't just come completely out of left field. As an agency, we'd been taking the piss out of ourselves and the business for years. And the fictional "Frank Zulu" featured in this piece had already played a key role in our very tongue in cheek spoof of "the typical agency website website" website (which I also had a hand in).
For the record, we had no allusions as to where this pitch would end up – other than perhaps gracing the news feeds and blog rolls of whatever trade pubs decided to take notice. Which of course was the entire point.
That, and to have/poke a little fun at our own expense while celebrating a pretty huge deal in the process. Enjoy.
