CLIENT: Bell Canada
AGENCY: Zulu Alpha Kilo
YEAR: 2012-2019
ROLE: Concept, Copywriter, Creative Director
I had the pleasure of working on the Bell Canada business not once, but twice during separate stints with two different agencies. My time on the account was marked by the extreme evolution of Internet and Mobile technologies. Interestingly, the only that really ever changed in the briefs were specifics of the upload and download speeds and the size and form factor of the phones.
Over the years, I conceived, wrote, and help produce 100s of banner ads, more landing pages than I'm able to count and at least a few Flash games. Ahhh... Flash games. Unfortunately, the extreme shortage of pixels that characterizes work from back then, not to mention at least two major hard drive failures means you'll have to take my word for it. Well, my word and these four TV spots.
This first spot was shot on a shoestring budget in the empty loft area on the second floor of the agency. Taking advantage of in-house capabilities, this single shot time lapse was an easy sell as an alternative to what would have otherwise been a generic stock video execution.
So much for singularly focussed briefs... We're gonna need you to promote the new (at the time) flagship phone. And don't forget about the new killer "live TV" carrier benefit. Oh, and just for shits and giggles, could you make sure to promote Bell's Olympic sponsorship? And we know we can't get any recognizable athletes to participate, but do you think you could find a way to bring some celebrity cachet to the mix? Great thanks.
Doing more and making more (with the same brief) just got better. For this next Bell business bundle spot, we made a concious effort to get out of the typical office setting and into an environment that felt more real, more unique and more better.
Long before TikTok duets were a thing (or TikTok for that matter), a cappella vocalists on YouTube duetting with themselves by mixing multiple videos together was a big trending thing. Like, really big. And so were the screens on the latest generation of phones coming out on the Bell network. Seemed like an appropriate pairing at the time.
